Lets’ unlock the value of a professionally designed website for your business by understanding the factors that influence website costs.

As a business owner, you know that a remarkable online presence is crucial in today's digital landscape. A professionally designed website not only showcases your brand but also acts as a powerful tool for attracting and engaging customers. However, understanding the cost of building a website is essential for making informed decisions. In this comprehensive guide, we'll break down the factors that influence website costs while highlighting the value it brings to your business. Being a small business, Milk Moon Studio understands that a great site can be a big investment, and while we believe a beautiful, well designed site pays for itself it’s always good to know what your investment is actually paying for.

Factors Influencing Website Costs

Design Complexity

The complexity of the design plays a significant role in determining the cost of a website. Custom designs tailored to your brand identity and specific requirements may require more time and resources compared to pre-designed templates.

Factors such as intricate layouts, unique animations, and advanced visual effects can contribute to increased design complexity. This not only means that it can take time to put a beautifully designed site together in tools like Figma, but also prototyping interactions to visualise what animations, transitions and other interaction will look on the final product once development has actually been completed, essentially bringing the original static design to life before development had happened so that the client can see what they’ll get while still in the design phase.

Exploration and Conceptual Designs

Here at Milk Moon Studio we also kick off every design sprint with conceptual designs, and while this might not sound very important it involves a lot of exploration that can take a lot of time. We believe you should never have to hand over a brief and be given a design. For our conceptual design we take the brief and everything you like and explore different design directions, eventually narrowing that down with the client to a final design direction used to inform the design of the entire site.

This might seem like a waste of time, but at the end of the day the client ends up with a design tailored to them, and this step actually saves on cost and it keeps revert loops to a minimum since a direction was refined up front working closely with the client.

Functionality and Features

The desired functionality and features of your website can influence the cost. Customized features such as e-commerce capabilities, membership systems, booking systems, or integration with third-party APIs require additional development and testing. The complexity and extent of these functionalities can impact the overall cost.

This also doesn’t just come into play with third-party integrations, an extremely minimalist site that seems simple at first can have custom code doing the heavy lifting under the hood that might not be visible but takes time to dev. Since we’re a small Webflow design studio we try and keep things low-code, but no-code is still hard to achieve in most projects, even with amazing tools like Webflow which means the investment gives you functionality that just isn’t possible right out of the box.

Content Management System (CMS)

The choice of CMS affects website costs. While platforms like Webflow provide flexibility and ease of use, they may involve additional development time to achieve specific functionalities. On the other hand, using open-source CMS platforms like WordPress can offer cost advantages but may require more custom development to meet unique requirements, while also requiring much more ongoing maintenance just to keep things running smoothly and securely.

A custom CMS setup that’s provided by platforms like Webflow also means savings in future, while it might take a bit more setup during development it means it’s much easier for the client to maintain on their own without ongoing help from the development team.

Number of Web Pages

The number of web pages required for your website impacts the cost. Larger websites with multiple pages, such as e-commerce sites with extensive product catalogs or content-rich websites with numerous blog posts, may require more time for design, development, and content creation. These factors might not directly impact development, but always keep things like content creation in mind as an ongoing cost, whether that means paying copywriters or just the cost of your own time. There’s nothing worse than a site with a blog that never gets updated, a blog can be an amazing investment in your SEO, but that does mean content needs to be generated or it becomes worthless.

Aside from the above, the number of pages if actually more important for static pages. Each static page essentially needs it own design and then needs to be built, whereas something like a blog page is one page that needs to be designed and developed, which is then populated by the CMS. Each static page can drive costs up much more. Imagine having an About page and a Teams page. To have a beautiful site a lot of time and effort would go into designing and developing two pages. Combining them could save cost. It’s not necessarily half the work, but it easier to make 1 page look ‘full’ and beautiful.

Always look at your planned sitemap and see if there are things that can be consolidated.

Content Creation

Creating engaging and high-quality content for your website contributes to the overall cost. This includes writing compelling copy, sourcing or creating high-resolution images, producing videos or animations, and designing custom graphics. Professional content creation services can add value to your website but may also increase the cost. You might have all the copy sorted, but to create a beautiful compelling site means either creating custom graphics, sourcing just the right images, or both, and that can potentially add a lot of time.

Responsive and Mobile-First Design

With the increasing use of mobile devices, it's crucial to have a website that provides an optimal user experience across different screen sizes. Responsive and mobile-first design approaches ensure that your website looks and functions seamlessly on all devices. Implementing responsive design requires additional development and testing, which can influence the overall cost.

Integration with Third-Party Services

Integrating your website with third-party services, such as payment gateways, marketing automation tools, or social media platforms, and analytics can enhance its functionality. However, integrating these services often involves additional development effort and may require custom API integrations, impacting the overall cost.

Customization and Branding

Customizing the design to align with your brand identity involves additional design and development work. This includes incorporating your brand colors, fonts, logos, and other visual elements. Customized branding elements contribute to a unique and cohesive website but may add to the overall cost. Many sites these days are just customised templates, however, we believe in design and developing our sites from scratch, so aside from using your CI it can add to the cost.

SEO Optimization

Optimizing your website for search engines requires strategic keyword research, on-page optimization, metadata creation, and proper site structure. Incorporating SEO best practices from the early stages of website development ensures better organic search visibility and can contribute to long-term success. SEO optimization efforts may involve additional planning and development, affecting the cost.

Maintenance

Ongoing maintenance, updates, and support for your website should be considered when assessing costs. Regular security updates, software updates, content updates, and technical support may be required to ensure your website remains secure, up-to-date, and functional. This is usually the more important on platforms like Wordpress, but even on platforms like Webflow the addition of other integrations can mean that future updates can be necessary. These ongoing services may involve recurring costs or a maintenance agreement with your web development team.

Accessibility Compliance

Ensuring your website is accessible to individuals with disabilities is not only an ethical consideration but also a legal requirement in many jurisdictions. Designing and developing a website that adheres to accessibility standards involves additional effort and expertise, potentially impacting the cost.

Multilingual Support

If your business targets a global audience, providing multilingual support on your website may be necessary. Incorporating features that allow for easy language translations, localized content, or multilingual support systems can increase the complexity and cost of the project.

Security and Data Protection

Implementing robust security measures, such as SSL certificates, encryption protocols, and secure payment gateways, is essential for protecting user data and maintaining customer trust. Integrating these security features requires additional development and may involve ongoing maintenance and monitoring on some platforms, luckily it’s not much of an issue with Webflow.

Project Timeline

The timeline for completing your website project can affect the cost. If you require an expedited delivery or have tight deadlines, it may require additional resources and effort from the development team, potentially increasing the overall cost.

Geographical Location

The geographical location of the web development team can impact costs. Rates vary based on regional factors, such as labor costs and market demand. Working with a remote team or outsourcing to different countries may offer cost advantages but should be considered in terms of communication and project management.

Milk Moon Studio is a Webflow Partner, so as a declaimer, we might be biased when it comes to platforms, but from our experience over the years we’ll leave this as a final comment. While the investment in a custom design on a platform like Webflow can be more expensive than just buying a Wordpress theme, the fact that you get exactly what you want due to Webflow’s unrivalled design freedom, means that your investment is well worth it on a secure, optimised platform.
